I saw Oprah’s interview with Aishwarya Rai who is a famous actress in India. Before starting her acting career, she worked as a model, and gained fame after winning the Miss World contest in 1994.
Often acclaimed as the most beautiful woman in the world and I think she is a very beautiful and smart woman that she can communicate in several languages, including Tulu, Hindi, English, Marathi and Tamil and I like her accent when she speaks English.
Actually, I like Indian movies because most of them are romantic, musical and have action which is imputing to Indian culture.
India is an amazing and big country where you will see different languages and religions for example, about 81 percent of the people practice Hinduism, a religion that originated in India. Another 13 percent are Muslims, and millions of others are Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains. Also, eighteen major languages and more than 1,000 minor languages and dialects are spoken in India with more than 1 billion inhabitants; India ranks second only to China among the world’s most populous countries.
Therefore, some Indian people communicate with each other in English because it’s hard to learn eighteen major languages and that’s why Aishwarya Rai was surprised when many people ask her about her English that they thought she learned outside India.
Also, living with her family surprised Oprah and the audiences because living with parents is popular in Indian culture even in my country which is different than American culture.
Any way it was a nice interview with her and I really enjoyed it.

There was one accident when an old man did violence to a teenager couplewho were kissing at a public park. It happened when the old man restrained them from kissing, they talked back, saying “Don’t bother me”, and he got angry. This accident became a hot issue in Korea about whose fault it was, and how much intimate behavior should be allowed in a public place. People mostly thought the young couple should be more polite and consider other people who were at that place. I could see Korean society is still rather conservative, it is becoming more open than before, though. It is no problem holding hands, hugging, however, more than that usually makes people, especially the old people, feel uncomfortable. Meanwhile, young people have more open minds, so it often leads to trouble between different generations like this case. When Aishwarya Rai talked about India, I found there are some common things between Korean and Indian culture such as that excessive intimate behavior is considered rude and living with family before marriage is common, which is different from western culture.
3 years ago, I went to the US for the first time, and I was a little surprised seeing people were kissing and expressing their love without minding other people’s eyes. And unlike when I was in Korea, It looked just so beautiful and natural. It may be because of my perception of this country. I felt differently with the same situation in a different area. We can’t say which culture is better or worse, it has been formed for a long time.

Back to the case that I mentioned before, it might be seen rude naturally from a point of view of the old man as that’s what he had thought and learned for his life. On the other hand, I think, for those young couple, their behavior was just natural. But I think there is one thing where they were wrong. They shouldn’t have retorted against him, or should have talked politely, because that’s the virtue and courtesy to treat older people politely in Korea. Having seen the conversation between Aishwarya and Oprah, I saw cultural differences of each country like those of different ages in Korea. And I think what we only need is a little understanding not to make any problems.

Honestly, I don’t usually think about the Iraq War deeply in my daily life, but watching the talk show this time gave me a good opportunity to think about the war. I wonder how much longer the U.S. military will be in Iraq? While they have been in Iraq, have any positive changes happened for world peace so far? Since the war started in 2003, now it seems to me that things are still messed up. I cannot help but think that many people benefit from the war and want it to last longer while a large number of Iraqis and U.S. military are dying. Since I heard Obama has been strongly opposing the war before it started, I want him to be the next president so that the war will end earlier. I actually don’t really care whoever the next president is as long as the person will pull-out all the U.S. military from Iraq. People are being killed for a “justice” that should never be allowed. Who is making money from the war anyway?

After the United Kingdom made India a colony in the 19th and 20th centuries, English has become an official language in this eastern country. Many people thought that this would change the culture of the Indian people forever. However, after a century of being independent, India, one of the cradles of human civilization, maintains its traditional culture of an eastern country. When I watch Oprah’s show with Aishwarya Rai, I can’t help thinking that Aishwarya is really an eastern woman, though she speaks English perfectly. In my opinion, eastern countries may have some differences in their lifestyles, but they all share some fundamental similarities in culture. Therefore, what Aishwarya says will probably be the same as what many other eastern women want to say.

The best way to differ East and West is to look at family life. While eastern people often depend too much on their families to make important decisions in their lives, western people seem not to. Children in Asian countries normally grow up within the “tight protection” of their parents, while those in American and European countries have more independence. As Aishwarya says, “it is one of the most beautiful special things” for one to stay connected with his or her parents until getting married. In Vietnam, it is even considered abnormal if a person lives alone before getting married, except for schooling or vocational reasons. Today, many couples still live with their parents, the husband’s parents in particular. In term of living on one’s own, western people seem very different. In addition, although arranged marriage in eastern countries is not as popular as it was in the past, it is still prevalent here and there. Certainly, parents still have an important role in one’s making a marriage decision; and a couple’s happiness also depends much on the harmonious relationship between the in-laws.

Another interesting thing is the public taboos. Kisses or hugs in public has long been considered a beauty in western culture. We sometimes even see “free hugs” service in Waikiki or Ala Moana. While eastern people still feel shy to do so, especially in rural areas.

It is hard and impossible to say which culture is better. However, it can be seen that in the recent years, East and West have come together nearer and nearer thanks to the globalization and the development of technologies.

When I was high school student, I took world geography and world history. Because I really interested in other country’s culture. Especially, I liked to study Asia part. Though I lived in Asia, but I never been the other Asian countries before. The other Asian countries culture’s looks like very similar, but totally different.
For instance, Indian is Caucasian. That’s why they look so different with Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, which originated Mongol. They more look like western people. So some people called them Indo-European. Aishwarya Rai, who is very famous actress in India, has very attractive face. She has blue-green eyes. Actually I like blue eyes. I don’t like edge nose, huge eyes, and blond hair. But I really envy blue eyes. And her eyes are so beautiful. Her eyes remind me to Pacific Ocean.
India’s culture is very unique. They have traditional clothes, which is called Sari. Aishwarya Rai shows Sari on Oprah show. In my personal opinion, it seems very hot. India is not that cold country. I can’t understand why they made those clothes too long. But the fabric textile is so wonderful. Korea has traditional clothes too. But unfortunately, we don’t wearing those clothes often. Only on New years day or Chusuk (Korean Thanks giving day), we wearing our traditional clothes, called Hanbok. Because Hanbok is a little uncomfortable. And many people prefer to wearing suit or dress, instead wearing Hanbok, I insist that Korean should wearing Hanbok more often. Like, Sari, or Kimono, these traditional clothes are very popular in U.S.A. But most people don’t know about our clothes. Because Korean don’t usually wearing Hanbok.
I think, Aishwarya Rai is very proud of her country. She loves her traditional clothes, Sari. And she did not embarrassed when she talking that she still living with her family. That’s her life and her culture. And I thought India is very conservative country, but during write this journal, I changed. India has many appealing clothes and people that include western and eastern side. And I hope that many Korean enjoyed to wearing Hanbok someday.

I agree with Oprah saying “Isn’t she gorge?” Aishwarya is one of the most beautiful ladies I’ve ever seen. I hope that she has never taken plastic surgery, though. Sadly enough, we’ll never see her starring in James Bond series. I didn’t know the fact that in Indian culture, kissing is something that people keep private. One question, however, still remains even after I googled her. I found a scene of the movie or something in which a man tries to flirt with her and gives kisses to her cheek, eye lid, neck, ears, and around the area close to her lip. So my question is “Why is it OK to kiss her except on lips? The way capturing Aishwarya and the guy in the scene is more sexual than that in American movies. Is a lip that sacred?” I wonder if she would turn down an offer of being a Bond’s girl.

So check back tonight, and hopefully, something will be here.

If not, I'll definitely have a talk show to watch in class on Wednesday.

Sabina's 3rd Journal - Oprah Winfrey Show with Aishwarya Rai

The topic of my journal for this week is “Arranged Marriage”. It was natural to have arranged marriages in Korea. Sometimes, two people who were to wed did not meet each other until the day of the wedding. Even if a man and a woman had no love for each other, they often agreed to marry because they have similar educational backgrounds and economic accomplishments. Fortune-tellers gave their stamp of approval to proposed marriages. Using the year, month, day and hour of birth, fortune-tellers foretold future happiness and whether a couple was compatible.

Although times have changed with modernization and western influence, traditional matchmaking culture in Korea still exists in different and legal forms. Unlike ladies called Madame Ttus who tied upper-class knots using their own intuition, modernized matchmaking agencies pursue a more systematic and well-organized approach. There are two types of matchmaking agencies in Korea: a traditional matrimonial agency and a dating agency aiming to strike a successful match, leading to marriage. Matrimonial agencies receive fees if the match leads to marriage. Dating agencies, on the other hand, receive a certain amount of money based on the number of blind dates provided.

Marriage is the most important event in everyone’s life and means creating a family not by money but by love, even though some don’t think so. Of course a few people repeat marriages and divorce easily according to their situation. However, even if time goes by, what shouldn’t be changed for marriage is that it should be based on love, trust and responsibility, I think. Someone could question me, “Is love everything?” or “Can people live only with love?”. My answer is absolutely “No”. But I believe that it can be a valuable source to solve problems and defend conflicts. Also, I currently live trying to keep it in my mind.

The first thing what I felt after watching the talk show is my listening skill still have a problem to follow their talking in real talk show. I’ve listened many times repeatedly, but still I have some parts that I cannot totally understand. I hope it will getting better if I practice to listen again and again and take dictate it.
after I’ve moved to hawaii , I can contact about American president candidates many times on television or newspaper. Actually , I have a little interested in politician, even in Korean. I just had concered about who won the primary between obama and hillary. In this talk show, I could know hillary’s human side like a just a student who met a guy after taking a class, and have a lot of headbands still now. Whenever I think about hillary, the first feeling about her is power, strength, and speech skills, etc. however, I ‘ve changed my view to hillary from strong politician to human who is similar with us.
In korea, we have talk shows what have guests like politicians sometimes. Through the talk show, they show us their more humanlike aspects. In comparison to Korean talk shows, tyra show’s atmosphere is more informal and free. But sometime I felt annoyed when tyra cut hillary’s talking. It makes harder to understand their talking to me.

Through this talk show, I’ve realized how black women feel about their appearance, love and their confidence. I have never thought about black people seriously, because I’m Korean, an Asian. Actually, I haven’t had a lot of experience with black women as well as black people. Although I’m living in Hawaii, it’s very uncommon to be close to black people, that’s why I am unconcerned about their lives and their opinion. While I was watching this talk show, I thought not only racial discrimination but sexual discrimination still exists in the world. I have heard about that, especially Asians have a prejudice against black people. In Korea, there are lots of foreign English teachers working in many colleges or private language school now, but it is difficult to find the teachers who are black people. That’s because most students prefer the teachers with white skin color more than black teachers. I think it’s sort of a conservative stereotype about other races. It has been changed a lot, but the crimination still remains in many people’s thinking. Black women compared with black men are treated more discriminatingly. Standards of women’s beauty are usually followed by the white women’s appearance. For almost all women, tall height, slim legs, big breasts, big double-eyelids , a long nose, fair skin, and straight hair are the common standards of beauty. However, I could catch through Tyra’s show that the black women have a strong confidence in themselves in this kind of hard reality. It was very impressive to me even though they have difficulty finding a boyfriend or to getting married; they never think about their race in a bad way. They always try to be successful and have a strong confidence instead of just feeling frustrated.

One of my roommates was a flight attendant for Arab Emirates airline. Sometimes, I’ve heard some stories about her experiences from her time of working for that airline company. Arab Emirate’s air line usually flies over Middle-east countries. So she served to a lot of Indian passangers on the plane. She usually talked about Indian’s class has a large gap between themselves about different opinions and scale of properties. When she stayed in India and walked along a town’s street, almost every Indian stared at her very curiously, like as a monkey in the zoo, because they have few experiences seeing Asians. On the other hand, when she served first class passengers , she was surprised that they were totally different from the common people. One time, one passenger gave to the captain of the plane a tip of 8000 dollars. Though this time, watching a talk show, I caught that Aishwarya as the top model and movie star in the world, but she is still concerned about and follows taboos and traditional ideologies, the kind of conservative rules in India. I felt that Aishwarya ‘s keeping her country’s taboo can be sort of pride or patriotism in a good way. In Korea, we also have our own taboo or still keep traditional things in our society. As a stranger’s view, when we see India’s life, we can maybe consider it’s too conservative and cannot understand. However I think it’s important to comprehense their lifestyle, culture, tradition including taboos. That we can not see the kissing scenes in Indian movie can be their own unique style in the film market over the world. Aishwarya ‘s discussion about her culture and taboos on a worldwide talk show and introducing her country’s traditional clothes was impressive to me.

Big deal

Not much can surprise people especially after the advent of the internet. But occasionally, there are things that greatly astound our perceptions. And it’s not because they’re fresh, new, something that strikes with rejoice and wonder. These surprises rather unexpectedly, assault our hope sometimes.
The French in the 18th century showed to the world the power of democracy, or in other words, popular sovereignty. However, soon enough, money worked its way into making sure that it would be democracy’s very weakness. Our modern society is so easily influenced that influencing became a trend among politicians and of course, investors. Teleguiding people has never been more exploitable. It’s indeed surprising to find out that India has a thriving movie industry that overcomes Hollywood by generating twice as much profit and reaching billions of viewers in India alone. Nonetheless, despite modest disparities when paralleled to its American counterpart, it was unanticipated realizing that such industry features, as the utmost in stardom, Aishwarya Rai, an Indian actress with so many fan clubs that she makes the Beatles look like a garage band. What can by no chance surprise is that she is yet another fabricated role model to be mimicked. Perfectly reproduced as a true American icon, Aish, as she prefers to be referred to, sells not only no-kissing Indian movies, she disseminates the ever-looked-after consumption culture to a remote-controlled society and it doesn’t take great labor to bring vividly to the mind who’s behind it. Yes, Hollywood is second to none.

Hillary-ous
It might have been the very first time most Americans heard Hillary Clinton talk about such personal aspects of her private life in recent years. Since she decided to run for president, her campaign has been so meticulously arranged that every time she is seen on TV or on newspaper photographs she seems to be a personality from a completely different realm, a person almost unreal, an analogy of a movie star in all her glory.

Surely, it is a surprise to find out how she had a difficult time handling her new cell phone. Who would have thought she can hardly manage sending and receiving simple text messages, or even that Hillary Clinton had a cell phone she herself called it to be from the 19th century.

And although she would like to feel better about her looks, as she rapidly agrees before dodging the question with a comment that wisdom overpowers looks, she maintains an image of a strong yet sensible home wife who met her husband just like any other college girl. And let’s face it, contemplating how Bill Clinton looked in that picture back in the day, makes one think that head bands would be Hillary’s coolest accessory back then. But past all looks concerns, Hillary Clinton today is a dazzling good looking and charming woman who could easily win the elections just because of that, considering.

Perhaps the interview’s most interesting fact, call it an obvious political strategy if you will, is that the arguably most controversial candidate in the current election dispute revealed a subtle, but very fundamental facet of hers. Hillary Clinton demonstrated to be a godly woman, which made her sustain a torn marriage and convincingly forgive a double-dealer husband. Regardless of the generic characteristic of the religious tendencies in contemporary politics, this is exactly what American voters want.

Fresh cookie heads
Predictable as always, the media continues to do what it has always done: Setting the standard. But, do people buy more fresh cookies because they are fresh or fresh cookies are fresh because people buy them more? Or should it be: Does the media set the standard because we buy it or do we buy it because it sets the standard? Once again, another TV show tries to make us keep on thinking that looking good is so much better.

This time it is the Tyra Banks Show featuring America's Next Top Model 2 winner Yoanna House, a college student who was transformed into a beauty queen by the magic of television. The recipe could not be simpler than getting a cute girl, make her look even cuter and show people how cool she is.

Renato Russo in his street-wise Latin poetry once said that our parents are children, just as we all will be when we grow up. Infantile as it may be, we continue to feed the industry of the beautiful, the fit, the industry of appearances. Is it not true that no one would care if she were just of average intelligence ? Well, the idea is already imprinted in our very minds, after all who do we see on TV showcasing the products we buy? No wonder quick-slim shakes are sold by the millions and fitness centers are jam packed.

Tyra Banks with her role-model-they-need TV show along with, this time, Yoanna House are merely mainstream propaganda of a much larger picture: Look good or be out.

Jackie's 3rd Journal

First of all, I want to say Aishwarya Rai is so beautiful. I agree. I could understand why most people say she is a pretty woman. Anyway, my first focus is that Aishwarya, who is 30 years old, has been living with her family. She said “My living with my family is such a topic?” That is exactly what I want to say. It is just a kind of culture difference. That is also a very common situation in Korea. Almost all Korean people live with their parents until they get married. Of course, there are some exceptions. For instance, if people who live in country side enter the university in an urban area, they have to separate from their family. But, what it boils down to is that their parents want to live with their children even if their children are over 20. Because they worry about their children’s lives.
Second, after I watched this show, I was surprised that there is no kissing scenes in all Bollywood movies. Perhaps, all recent movies have kissing scenees even in the action blockbusters and comic movies. They said they express love scenes with singing scenes. So, almost all Bollywood movies have singing scenes. Even though, I have never watched a Bollywood movie, I would feel something strange about that. Maybe I will laugh when I watch that scene. I think that is bad taboo. Bollywood movies can not be famous with that sort of taboo. If they change the singing scenes to kissing scenes, Bollywood movies would be more famous than today’s Bollywood.
Some nations are restricted because of their culture. I know I have no right to say that is bad culture and it’s so hard to change their culture. However, they need to change their own culture to the common culture of all over the world.

David Letterman - With Barack Obama

mosaid's journal 2

I saw the Tyra Banks Show with my classmates in our class and it was really fun to listen to their reactions about Tyra and Yoanna’s talk especially when our teacher John pretended to be like Tyra and each of us pretended to be like Yoanna and we made a small talk show in our class that each student had to remember what Yoanna said which is funny and difficult at the same time.
Actually, it was my first time to watch Yoanna and I didn’t know that she is famous because she is America’s next top model.
Basically, in this show she talked about her life and why she wanted to do high fashion in Europe also, she talked about her story when she could lose about sixty pounds in two years and how it’s hard to lose it especially when she loves to drink a lot of smoothies like Frappuccinoes which are fat free and how she didn’t care about doing exercise.
It was a good experience that we can learn many things from it and I agree how it’s hard to do exercise for a long time without giving up.
In my experience, for more than six months I worked out alone at the gym and I couldn’t stay more than one hour because I got bored quickly but after I met a group of guys who were working out there I started to stay for more than three hours because we worked out together as a group and we encouraged each other which was good for me that I won’t give up. So if you really want to enjoy working out at the gym you have to go with your friends or try to get new friends at the gym which is helpful for you to continue doing exercise and you will love it.

The diet, this has been the most challenging assignment of my life so far (maybe it’s going to be continued.) I started to go on a diet when I was 14 years old, and I’ve been repeating losing and gaining weight. I think I tried many different kinds of diet such as one-food diet, fitness, jogging, fasting…. I even took medicine which decreases appetite. It seems like going on diet is my habit. I got self-confidence when I managed to lose weight as much as I wanted, meanwhile, when I gained weight again, it was even more stressful than before and was leaded to overeating and I was seized with thoughts that I’m too fat. Even though people say to me I’m not fat, my body image, that I saw, reflected in the mirror was seen too fat.

What the problem is that this is not only my problem. Women’s desire to be slim, even skinny, is becoming a social issue. Especially, fashion models, who have to be skinny, are suffering from their weight. Some models, in fact, died having been on a diet excessively for a few years. As a result, it is said that too skinny model has to be left to make right image of beauty to public.
Another problem is that the number of people who have a eating disorder is increasing. Being seized with stress of a diet, their body rejects food. There is the website where the people, especially young girls who want to be skinny, share information, they are going on a diet sharing inappropriate diet methods, drugs information or seeing the uploaded picture of skinny models. They even say it’s sexy seeing a rib sticking out of body because of being skinny.

Yollana, who appeared on Tyra’s show, said proudly she lost weight 50 pounds after 2 years to be a model, which infers women should be slim to be beautiful. Even though she made an effort to lose weight for a long time in a healthy way, the audience doesn’t see the process but the figure seen right now. It isn’t easy to change people’s perception about beauty but there should be no people who suffer from that problem at least and any shows on TV should contribute to do so now that it affects to public a lot.

Beautiful, cute, ugly, skinny, fat --- all the adjectives are used to express very subjective opinions. However, a lot of people are obsessed with these adjectives even though there is a very ambiguous and blurry criterion for being beautiful and skinny. Fashion models have definitely influenced what being beautiful and skinny is. I’m taking the “Passion for Fashion” class now, and I’ve read the article saying that one of Spain’s fashion shows has decided to ban overly skinny model from being on the show. I think whoever models trying to lose weight and being on crash diet lacks professionalism. Why is being healthy not a part of being beautiful? What most models are concerned is how to keep their skinny shape. When did only being skinny start to represent beauty? Their excuses could be “well, model industry is very competitive and if I lose my shape, I’ll lose a job!” Is it worthy to be a fashion model even though they might have to suffer from anorexia or bulimia? Some models are just fine now, but nobody knows how the thing will turn out when they have excessive pressure for being skinny.

Linh's second journal

When I listen to people talking about multiracial dating, I think American society has changed so quickly. It took nearly a century since the Declaration of Independence for the country to liberate slavery. It took another century until the time of Martin Luther King for its people to have complete civil rights, in which black and white people are created equal. Years later racial discrimination no longer exists in this civilized country. Many politicians have effectively contributed to the progression of the country such as Martin Luther King and Barrack Obama. Many writers have shown their exceptional talents like Langston Hughes. A number of men and women like Michael Jordan, the Williams, Tony Braxton, Michael Jackson, etc… have made the world know more about America. It is unreasonable to think this group is better than another. No more do American people think so. I just wonder if people from one group still have any prejudice about the background of the others.

Nevertheless, love is a very different matter. Because love is love! Love is the harmony between the two souls. It is not a political or cultural matter. Although multiracial marriage has become popular today, obviously a person more easily falls in love with somebody who shares the same culture, language and lifestyles than with someone who does not. The facts that Tyra mentioned in her show appear not only in the United States but also in many other multicultural countries. In Vietnam 54 different ethnic groups live together in a small land. We have shared culture mutually for hundreds of years. We have understood each other’s customs and traditional practice quite well. However, multiracial marriage is still very rare so far.

However, the world is changing so rapidly. In my opinion, we are gradually crossing out the concrete borders between the countries and areas; so we will gradually crossing out the invisible borders in our mind.

Trya Banks Show-Black Women: State of Union

As a female, I found it hard and a bit surprising to believe that African American women have such a hard time to find themselves a compatible black man. I should feel sympathy for them, but somehow, I think it is an excuse to blame white women for taking their men. I believe everyone has a choice to find a perfect partner regardless of his/her appearance, gender, status, or race. Anybody has that choice to select a suitable person that is right for them.

The show reminds me of an issue that is happening in Taiwan. Many girls remain single and never get married during past decade. Not only because men in Taiwan prefer to marry with women who come from South East Asia, but also under the pressure of Chinese traditional concepts. It is really hard to be a female in Taiwan. I am tired of old traditions that my dad or my grandparents warn me about all the time, what a girl should do or shouldn’t do. I never see that my brother has to worry about these things. I think I should blame Walt Disney for making every little girl believe that she has her own Prince Charming waiting for her in a beautiful castle and live happily ever after. The fairy tale never shows me how real a life could be after their honeymoon. I think I am comfortable with the fact that I may end up by myself.

Jackie's 2nd Journal

After I heard about Yoanna on the Tyra Banks show, I thought about getting a nice body. these days, many people want to get a nice body. Gettinga nice body is kind of the rage in Korea as well as America. A number of Korean people are exercising so as to get a nice body. Also, some star entertainers who have a nice body write a book about how to get a nice body. I thought about this tendency. Why do so many people try to make a nice body? And then, I thought of three reasons.

First, people want to feel confident. If someone gets a nice body better than others’, he can feel confident. Because most people think that they also want to get a nice body like him. So, he can feel self-esteem everywhere and all the time

Second, people want to be attractive. Surely every man prefers a woman with a nice body, so does every woman. Moreover, as you know, a person’s body also makes a first impression. Therefore, a healthy appearance is very influencial to make a good first impression. Some even people say, “I prefer a person who has a nice body to a person who is handsome or pretty.” It means a person’s body is very important part of our beauty.

Finally, a nice body means someone is healthy. Because retaining a nice body requires doing exercise. On average, people who have a nice body do exercise for over one hour in a day. They are not couch potatoes, but, exercise in their free time. So, their mind or thinking is clear. I Even think that they can become more creative than others who always watch TV or play computer games.
For these reasons, I think this kind of tendency is very good and helpful. Having a good appearance (I mean, face) can be an unfair thing. Otherwise, getting a nice body is fair to everyone.

Reiko's 2nd Journal

On the talk show, Yoanna mentioned how she put effort into her diet. She said that she knew her body type and should not have been too skinny even though she really wanted to lose weight. What she had been aiming for was to get in shape and get healthy, not to be unhealthily skinny. I strongly agree with her opinion since recently many people have been having misconceptions about a beauty. I think that the beauty-standard today based on celebrities or fashion models has been controlled by the media and many people tend to think to be skinnier is to be more beautiful, no matter how risky the diet they are on. People should realize that each person should have a different ideal of beauty; to put too much effort on losing weight in order to have a body such as the models on fashion magazines is not always the right way for everybody. If people think they are out of shape and want to get in shape, they should know their right body image first so that they will be able to be on the right diet that is not risky. I actually should lose weight since I feel myself worse than I used to be. Diet requires me to have persistence because I know there’s no way to be able to lose weight healthily in a short period.

I really envy Yoanna. Because she has a beautiful face, also she changed her body shape so she has become popular in the supermodel world. I know that it is hard to lose weight. Many people failed to lose weight. But Yonnna succeeded, and she deserved to be a supermodel.
In fact when I was in high school, I had many complaints about myself. Why am I short? Why do I have small eyes and bad skin? When my friends told me that you look like a geek or ugly, I really wanted to change my face. I just wanted to have a normal face. However, soon I realized that there are many ugly faces in the world. And we called it “Individuality.” Many people have their own characteristics. Some people are satisfied their weird characteristics. But some people hate their ugly characters, so they change their characteristics to good looking by surgery.
I am relieved, that there are many people just like me. But still I think that appearance is important in this society. For example, I applied to many clothes stores for a job, which are located in Ala Moana Shopping Center. These stores have many employees who are pretty, handsome and tall. I was nervous. But at that time, I really needed a job, so I tried to get a job there. The Interview was fine. I answered fluently, and I always smiled at the interviewers. And they never gave me a call again. May be that’s because they didn’t like my answer, or my attitude or my smile. But I still strongly believed that they didn’t like my appearance. I understand. The store’s staff are all white people with blond hair and a good body shape. And I have none of those. Anyway, I got a job at Structure , a few weeks later. That company didn’t require an interview.
But now, it’s O.K. I like my self. And I also think that personality and ability are more important than appearance. And I have one thing to say, handsome and pretty people can exist, because of people like me who has ugly face and short.

Sabina's 2nd Journal - Tyra Banks Show with Yoanna

After watching this talk show, I thought of a Korean lady who became very famous, because she lost a lot of weight and got into great shape. She had been fat after delivering babies. She said that she worked out for eight hours everyday, leaving her children at home with their grandmother. Everybody gave her a big hand for her efforts and tried to be the same as her. She showed up on many TV shows and became a commercial model. However, my opinion is different from others. When she decided to go on a diet and exercise, her kids were too young to part from their mom. It seems that she excessively focused on getting a good body shape and neglected her children. Currently, she is a role model for many women. She probably achieved her dream, even though she got divorced and her family left her. I don’t know what real success is. But I’m sure that keeping family happiness is more important than any other things.

In addition, I’d like to talk about my experience. Actually, I had never tried and exercised to lose weight. I had not cared about it, even when I’d overweighed. I’d never controlled my diet and had eaten anything that I’d wanted. Two years ago, I found it hard for me to climb even a hill. I felt more tired and exhausted than a year before. I realized that I’m getting older and weaker. So I began to learn Tennis from my husband and played it early morning every day. I woke up at 4:00 and went to the court. At that time Tennis was a part of my life. I started to lose weight and feel better. Hiking was not painful anymore. Anyway it is necessary that we exercise properly and efficiently for our health, I think.

Hello all,

Unfortunately, I cannot easily upload the interview we watched today (Tyra and Yoanna).

But, if you can remember the topics, you can write a journal about it. Or, you can write a journal about the show below.

Your, choice.

If you want to see more of this program, go to the following links: part 2, part 3, part 4 and part 5.

The Tyra Banks Show is an American Emmy Award winning talk show hosted by former supermodel and America's Next Top Model creator Tyra Banks. While the show covers a variety of topics, there is a sensationalized focus on current issues facing women. The show is aired in many countries.
In my opinion, The Tyra Banks show was boring even with an important person like Hillary Clinton because I don’t like Tyra’s character and some of her questions are not interesting and embarrassing to the guests.
But any way, it’s important to know about Hillary Clinton’s life and her reaction to Bill Clinton’s affair.
I heard from many people who didn’t vote for her said, that she couldn’t control her house or her husband so how will she control all of the country.
For me, I don’t care if she will became a president or not but I prefer the Democratic Party.
Any way I don’t want to talk about Hillary or Bill because it’s not our subject here but actually, from the beginning of our class I realized the difference between American talk shows and the talk shows in my country which are totally different.
Most of the talk shows in my country are serious even if the guests are actors, singers, and comedians or political which is kind of boring sometimes but in America they usually make the talk show funny even if the guests aren’t actors or comedians which is a good strategy to make the audience enjoy the talk show while they are watching it. And I agree with that especially if the guests are actors or comedians but I think it’s not good to make jokes with a political man or woman in front of the people which I think is disrespectful to them. But I think it’s ok to do it here in America which is imputing to the differences between the cultures

I watched this program on our blog several times. the first time, I couldn’t understand well. I understood what they were talking about but I couldn’t get the details. I felt that I couldn’t understand why they were laughing but finally I did.

Ms. Hillary Clinton was talking about her memories related to Mr. Clinton. I was really surprised that she talked about their story which is a very personal one. In Japan, present statesmen don’t talk about their personal stories. They may sometimes, but not about their love stories. Another thing which made me surprised is that she was talking about her headbands. She had a lot of headbands and never throws any of them away. It is surprising, but for me there is a more surprising thing. Why did she talk about her headbands? Did she need to do that? Is it that an important topic? I guess she is famous as a headband collector or she was a fashion leader. I would like to know why she talked about it.

Tyra asked her if she can use text messaging. It is a little funny but I can understand it. It happens a lot in Japan, too. Many of middle aged or older people cannot use text messaging. Sometimes they don’t know how to check the message box. My mother knows how to send and how to make messages but my father cannot do it at all. My mother used to say and make calls to me “I don’t know how to use it.” It was really annoying but finally she got it. However, now it is my father’s turn. I want to sigh. Anyway, it is common that many middle aged or older people don’t know how to use the text message system.

Since I have already written about my reaction to the video clip of Oprah and Letterman, I will write about it. I’ll watch Hilary’s video clip, though.
I really enjoyed watching the episode of Oprah being on The Letterman’s Show. I didn’t know there had been a feud between them. I was interested to know what exactly the unfunny joke Letterman told, but I couldn’t find any video clips regarding it. Anyway, Oprah’s amnesia story reminded me of one of the most terrible lies I have ever told when in middle school. The story goes like this: Me and my friends played baseball IN a classroom after school. We were using a wooden bat and a small rubber ball. When my friend swung the bat, it slipped out of his hand and penetrated two sheets of glasses. During the semester we had already broken enough of windows to be grounded by our parents, so we decided to make up a story. One of my friends went down stairs and picked up a rock while others were cleaning the scattered broken glass. Then we went to a teacher’s room to report the “accident”. Our made-up story was the small rock flew into the classroom out of nowhere, presumably from outside. And the rock almost hit one of us. It would not be difficult for you to imagine what our faces are like while talking to a teacher; our faces said “we are victims”. The teacher believed our story. I have had a feeling of guilt for a while.

A Talk show has a special power which makes people confess their true thoughts as far as the host has the ability to lead the guest to do so.
When Hillary Clinton appeared on Tyra’s show, I wondered what kind of topic will be dealt with. It could be about her pledge of presidential election, Obama who is Hillary’s rival, political issues. But what they talked about was her first date with Bill, stories about her youth, an image as Chelsea’s mother and Bill’s scandal. Mostly, they focused on her private life and Hillary showed she is not different from people in the audience. For me, at least, she looked friendly like someone from my neighborhood. Moreover, I saw her get a bit upset when she talked about Bill’s scandal, she is also just an ordinary woman the same as others before being a presidential candidate. I’m sure that it wasn’t easy for her to talk about it. Because she had to be reminded of that time and talk about her sorrow to millions of people in audience. I think having an affair happens a lot these days but it can be the biggest sorrow for all members of the family. I felt rather sorry for her about her faith as a public person. It was her choice and it’s the thing that she has to manage, though. Anyway I think this show might succeed to attract a lot of people’s attention and Hillary managed to show her intimate image, which is not usually shown.
On the other hand, I saw the limitations of Tyra Bank’s show. This show is, of course, aiming to women who mostly don’t like to hear too ‘serious things’. But they should have talked about her political opinion or effort to be the president or her thoughts about Obama and so on, at least, as the biggest issue of Hillary is her running for the presidency at this point.

In the first show, Hillary talked a little bit about the text message story, that she learned how to send it. The story reminded me how the cellphone dealt with my life when I was in Japan. The text messages are not common in Japan, but we basically have our e-mail address for each cellphone. Japanese, especially the young generation really like to send cellphone e-mails as a communication tool in their daily lives.
When I was a college student in Japan, I used to send my friends or boyfriend at least ten messages a day, including photos sometimes, via the cellphone so that I was able to get a hold of them. I think that in America people send text messages less compared to Japanese. Americans tend to call and talk directly rather than sending messages. It seems that they consider a cellphone as just a “phone”. The young generation, they prefer use a PC to cellphones to send
e-mails.
I think that the cellphone was more an entertainment tool that we often could share our feelings with each other by sending silly messages or photos in a day when I lived in Japan. I think that many Japanese like to send and receive their friends’ messages many times in a day, so that they are able to feel like “I am connecting to them” or “I am now belonging to a group”. It is interesting that now I kind of see the cultural differences between Americans and Japanese since I started living in Hawaii.

Phoenix's 1st Journal - Tyra Banks Show

I always want to watch Tyra Bank’s talk shows because I have been following her reality show “America’s Next Top Model” from cycle 1 to cycle 9 for years. I like her personality, how she shows her quick-witted responses, and her strong brief and desire in life during the shows.

Somehow, I was kind of disappointed after I watched her talk show. She seems like a beautiful barbie sitting there with her cute outfit and sexy high-heel shoes, all she did was ask questions and that’s all. I expected to see something more of her backchat like she did in ANTM, but I didn’t see any. I still like her though. After all, she is my role model in real life, not in the modeling industry in which I am so not qualified, but in the way she reveals her confidence to the public.

Hongshick's First Journal

Actually I don't have many information about Hillary Clinton. I don't interest in her an election campaign, or her private life. I just knew that she is one of the strongest candidates. But this show makes me get to different focus on her. She is a candidate, but also she is a woman in U.S. She has a love affair, and darkness moments like normal woman.
There's many important things in her speech, but I was really touched by when she speak "You have to be true yourself.” It really made me embarrassed. Because I usually not true myself. However, I decided to be true myself since when I was hearing that.
I also surprised about when Tyra asked to Hillary that someone asked to advice about family relationship. She is public person, so I think that it is hard to ask her that private thing. Even she is a good advisor. Besides, she is famous. Everybody know her, and some people want be her. She's like a star. And nobody wants to talk about their family's problem with star. I still can't understand.
And It is really funny, when Tyra said "I wannabe better.” That's all people's expectation. I do too, of course. I really want to be better on my study, my success, and my diet. In fact I'm not overweight, but I really need exercise. Unfortunately I hate moving. It is mysterious that I'm not fat. Though I am eating instant food a lot.
I just got curious that when Tyra amazed about Hillary can text message, why it is so amazing? Because there are many old people can text message through cell phone in Korea. My mother always does that too.
I really enjoyed this show. The reason why is I could understand easier than any other show. I also realize, Hillary is not so strict person. Maybe she's pretended, because of her election campaign. Who knows?

JOURNAL #1
The Late Show with David Letterman Interview of Oprah Winfrey

This is the first time I have watched a complete American talk show. Actually I do not like talk shows in my country much; yet this one really attracts me due to the excitement of both Dave, the host and Oprah, the guest. One characteristic of American talk shows I notice is that people talk like they are chatting in a very natural way, which makes the shows very exciting to watch. Another is that the role of hosts is so decisive to the success of the shows that they are considered as well-known actors or actresses and their names become the names of the shows. While Vietnamese talk shows attract different types of viewers by content or current issues, American talk shows distinguished themselves partly by the manner of hosts.

One more cultural aspect from the talk show I find interesting is the concern of people with media personalities. The relationships between famous people in my culture is nothing special to some of us while much attention of the public is paid to the feud between Dave and Oprah. Interestingly, Dave and Oprah’s personal matter would become widespread after the talk show though it was as normal as millions of others’. If we watch all three parts of the show we will realize how much attention American people pay to the first-time-after-16-year meeting between these two famous television characters.

I had not thought that talk shows could be attractive TV programs until I watched this talk show. That hundreds of people came to watch and listen to two people talking seems to be a strange thing to people from many other cultures because they are usually interested in live music shows or game shows, which are more vivid and exciting. The producers of this show know how to attract viewers by the deliberate preparation of music, stage and other facilities.

On the whole, the show is very exciting and worth watching. After enjoying the show, I think much of my future time will be spent on watching American talk shows on TV!

Jackie's 1st Journal

The Tyra Banks show was a new thing to me. I think Hillary Clinton is a kind of important person, so it was my first time to see an important person on a talk show. Usually, I think always, my country’s talk shows invite guests who are actors, actresses, stars, singers, comedians and announcers. Anyway, it was so interesting because tyra’s questions derived very funny stories from Hillary. I could even see Bill Clinton’s old picture. Where could I see the American ex-president’s youthful photo?

However, some of the questions were personal and rude in my opinion. One of the questions was about Bill Clinton’s affair. Tyra did not ask about that directly. She just said, “How did you persevere during the darkest moment in your life?” Who couldn’t know what was implied in that question? Probably, it was an annoying and embarrassing question for Hillary. Even though, Tyra knew every American audience member wanted to hear about that, she should’ve considered Hillary's feelings. If others thought that the question was relevant, it could be culture shock because it could be a problem in my country.

Anyway, I could feel Hillary’s perseverance and strong mind from her answers in the show. She deserves to be respected. I hope to feel that kind of honor from my country’s executive people.

Sabina's 1st Journal - Tyra Banks Show with Hillary Clinton

“You weren’t born with the same genes as somebody else” and “you’ve got to develop our respect and appreciation for who you are” are the most impressive remarks of Hillary Clinton. When I was a high school student, I didn’t like my appearance. “Why am I the shortest of all my siblings?” “I want to have bigger eyes, a smaller face and sharp nose.” These were my main agonies during my school days. Knowing that my external features could not be changed, I decided not to set a high value on how I look. As I get older and have more wrinkles, external features are not my concern.

In Korea, many people especially women have plastic surgery to change their appearance like beautiful actresses. Even quite old people do it. “Lookism”, which means discrimination against or prejudice towards others based on their appearances, is widely spread in Korea as well as all over the world. Frankly speaking, seeing a handsome man is kind of pleasure for me. However, I do not want to judge him by his appearance. I think that people should be valued by what they accomplish, or their character, or generosity, or intelligence or something else.

A few years ago, there was an advertising slogan of a Korean insurance company. It was “Nobody can remember a second place winner.” After it became popular, I heard a joke related to a woman tennis player. “Everybody remembers only second place.” At that time, Venus Williams had the No.1 world ranking and Maria Sharapova was following her.

Also, people use to say that "if you are beautiful, people will forgive all your faults when you make mistake.” How stupid this is! Like what Hillary Clinton said, all of us are different. All of us cannot be handsome and beautiful, so we need to search for our own values not outside but inside ourselves.
