4th journal-Hyewon

My name is Hyewon, Park which was given to me by my uncle. Actually I am really fond of my name while Kristene didn’t like her name.
in addition, I have several nicknames that people want to call me.
First, when I attended at cram school for English in Korea, I needed to make an English name, so, I just chose my name ‘Emily’. Every classmate and teacher called me ‘Emily’ ,even now they say Emily when they call me. After moving to Hawaii, there are some situations that I need my English name, sometimes at a take-out restaurant or changing room at a shop. Emily is quite useful for my life in Hawaii, and that name makes me aware of studying and practicing English so hard.
Second, since one of the Korean medical dramas has been televised, I started to be called ‘Mimi’. That’s because one of doctor’s appearance on that drama resembles me according to other people, also her character in the drama which is very restless and childish speaking seems like mine. As more people call me ‘Mimi’, I got more accustomed to being called ‘Mimi’ than my real name ‘Hyewon’. Even some friends who I have met in Hawaii are misunderstanding that my real name is ‘Mimi’.
Finally, at my home in Hawaii, I am called ‘baby’, in Korean ‘Aegi’. Because, I’m living with my three roommates who all are older than me. Also, they have lived in Hawaii for a long time, so they would like to take care of me in many ways. According to how other people call me, I think my behavior changes a bit.
When I worked as a news announcer at a Korean radio station in Hawaii for one month, I broadcasted short news with my name. One time, my friend’s parents told me that they had listened to my news everyday and they had remembered my name. It was so moving to me and I feel proud of myself , my name. Being remembered by someone is a very responsible and valuable experience.
Although ‘Hyewon’ is a very common name in Korea and so many ‘Hyewons’ live in this society, I want to be remembered specially. When somebody remembers my name and thinks about me, not to be considered shameful, I have determined to do my best at everything else

You're lucky to have such nice roommates who always concern you. Calling you "baby" is the way to express their affection toward you. I often call my daughter "baby", although she doesn't like to be called like that.
