Jackie's 4th Journal

Kristen Bell said she tried to change her name when she was young. I did exactly the same thing. When I was young, I thought my name is sort of a weird thing because my name, Seong Ryong, is the same as Jackie Chan’s Korean name. Thus, some rude Korean people tried to make me fun. For instance, they said, “Show me your fight motion, Jackie Chan!” But, I didn’t say anything about changing my name to my parents. Frankly, I was so irritated by those comments and the people who said them made me mad. Besides, my brain always forgot to say that to my parents. Anyway, in the past, I didn’t like my name. But, now I totally love my name and I thank my parents who gave this gorgeous name to me. I realized that my name has many advantages. There are three big reasons why I think my name is a nice thing.
First of all, my name is rare in Korea. When I find someone who has the same name as me, I’m so surprised. Some Korean names are very common. For example, there were 4 people who have the same name and age in my middle school. 3 of them even hadthe same family name. How weird .
Second, I don’t need to choose or think about my English name. I can just choose Jackie like Jackie Chan. It’s very beneficial for me because I usually consider naming something. At least, I didn’t waste time thinking about my great English name.
Finally, my name is so easy to remember. I think it is the best merit of my name. I have never seen someone who forgot my name. I introduce myself with mention of Jackie Chan on purpose. Perhaps, they can not forget my name. It’s so terrific.

For all of these reasons, I feel happy with both of my names, Seong Ryong and Jackie. I feel thankful.

I regret giving my children difficult names to pronounce. So they needed English names when they came here first. Fortunately, they have their own catholic names like me.

Hi Jackie,

It's so funny to read your journal. You give out very proper reasons why you like your name. I like this name, too for three reasons: 1) it is easy to remember 2) it sounds familiar and friendly and 3)it seems to be the name of a schoolboy.

I always wonder how Korean people come up with their English names. Just choose whatever names they like???
